Summer’s heating up! And nothing says summer quite like driving a convertible. In fact, these cars were designed and built with pleasure driving in mind.
In honor of Collector Car Appreciation Day today, the classic car experts at Hagerty® have listed their 5 favorite classic convertibles of summer.
Enjoy the ride!
1. 1955-57 Chevrolet Bel Air
As the old ad goes, there’s baseball, hot dogs, apple pie, and Chevrolet. Few things are more quintessentially American than the aforementioned, and the “tri-five” Chevy Bel Airs built in 1955, 1956, and 1957 are their automotive equivalents. A Bel Air convertible in Tropical Turquoise is the perfect summer day cruiser for you and 4 (lucky) friends.
2. 1965–67 Ford Mustang
The Mustang is instantly recognizable by most and has endured shifting preferences among buyers to maintain relevance. They seat 4 people comfortably and can keep up with modern traffic.
3. 1968–82 Chevrolet Corvette
An American stalwart. In 1968, convertibles made up two-thirds of the Corvettes sold. High production numbers and low upkeep costs practically guarantee an affordable example of the C3 Corvette resides nearby.
4. 1976-86 Jeep CJ-7
Another classic American with roots in the original Willys Jeep from WWII. Today, few things say summer like a CJ with the doors removed and a dog in the passenger seat.
5. 1989–97 Mazda Miata
Still ignored by a population of drivers who made up their mind about these cars without ever sitting behind the wheel of one. Their loss is your gain as Miatas are as rewarding to drive as any cheap, 2-seat sports car has a right to be.
