I’ve only been in one car accident (knock on wood). It’s been quite a few years, but I remember it like yesterday. I was 16 and on my way to school, taking the same narrow curve that I drove every morning. The only difference that day was the giant truck coming around the curve from the opposite direction.
I don’t remember the impact so much as the eerie silence that followed. Blondie had been playing on the radio, and then suddenly Blondie wasn’t playing anymore. Everything seemed to move in slow motion. Was everyone okay? What about my precious car?
Since I was driving about 10 mph at the time, no one was hurt. But my car (a 1991 Volvo 240 … they don’t make ‘em like that anymore) suffered pretty extensive damage — it did collide with a truck, after all. Insurance info was exchanged, the car was towed away, and I was mortified.
As my car’s fate hung in the balance, all I could do was wait.
