Beatrice: Instead of mailing everyone my vacation photos, I’m saving a ton of time by posting them to my wall.

Friend 1: Oh, I like that one.

Beatrice: It’s so quick! It’s just like my car insurance. I saved fifteen percent in just fifteen minutes.

Friend 2: I saved more than that in half the time.

Beatrice: I unfriend you.

Friend 2: That’s not how it works. That’s not how any of this works.

Fifteen minutes for a quote isn’t how it works anymore. With Esurance, 7½ minutes could save you on car insurance. Welcome to the modern world.

This commercial is my favorite ever! I love ole folks and these gals are just precious! Whoever put this together did a great job! I laugh every time I see it. It never gets old. I am not "allowed" to have a Facebook so guess this is the life I will have to resort to… Sigh :( . I see this lady as me when I'm elderly. But at least esurance has helped me smile on my way to insanity.

Beatrice used to work at the Boston Conservatory and was my vocal teach for a bunch of years. I believe that is her. Can someone tell me if her last name is Dobelle. I haven't seem her in 20 years. I miss her and want to say hi to her and thank her for teaching me classical vocals.

The actress' daughter wrote a Q&A blog post about her which tells you her name and more. Check it out!

      Hi Ann,
We’re sorry you felt the commercial was insulting; we certainly didn’t intend it that way.

The idea of the campaign is to demonstrate how quickly things change in the modern world and position Esurance as a smarter and more efficient choice for car insurance.

While it’s true that Beatrice is a bit behind the times, we attempted to balance her with a similarly-aged (but more up-to-date) friend who counters “That’s not how any of this works anymore.”

The intent is to show that it can be difficult to keep pace with technology these days (no matter your age), but that Esurance can help you do just that.

In future commercials, you’ll see a broad range of ages represented. Our goal at Esurance is to continue making car insurance simpler and to welcome everyone to the faster, smarter, and just plain better modern world.

Thank you again for your feedback. We hope as the campaign unfolds, you’ll enjoy watching people of all kinds try to keep up with modern times.

Ellen – thank you for responding to my response. her friends are mired in the 1940s (appearance-wise) as well. do something for me – google up "old athletes." i think it would be an eye-opener for you. trust me, there are thousands of us out here who strive to maintain fitness and health, and love the clothing of today. i'm probably older than beatrice and i rock low-rise jeans and a mohawk, hit the gym every other day, rollerblade and snowshoe. not braggin', i am not the only one. search the finish line at the next marathon for future models.

Great…you didn't intend to insult people, but you did.
Maybe your next commercial should feature advertising types brainstorming on "how to keep up with modern times" by deciding not to resort to the "stupid old people" meme.

This is one of the GREATEST commercials ever. Ranks with Time to Make the Donuts & Take Human Bites! Everyone critical of this is A – WAY too politically correct (and I'm a life-long Liberal), B – Has far too much time on their hands, C – Has no sense of humor, a defining quality of sentient beings and that includes house cats….

I must admit that I stop whatever I'm doing to watch this – even going so far as to grab the remote so no one can channel surf. Each time, I pick up something I missed from before. Who would have thought that the "old folks" could sustain such pacing of dialogue, and yet, that is EXACTLY how it goes sometimes with some hilarious results. Beatrice reminds me of my spouse's grandmother – feisty, always keeping up with the times in her own way. Kudos to the creative forces behind this spot!

i stop and watch whenever that commercial is on. When that first friends say, “That’s not how any of this works anymore.” I just love it. She is such a natural, and love her expression when she looks at friend 2. She is priceless.

I know everyone found their way here because they are in love with (or maybe offended by) Beatrice, but I gotta say that "Friend 2" is what makes the commercial for me. I love her! I believe she represents all the millions of seniors who understand, and are fully engaged with, modern technology and communication methods. There are certainly plenty of "Beatrices" out there, but there are many more "Friend 2s" out there and I applaud you for recognizing that she exists.

I agree… Friend two is what made it for me. I'm assuming the age of the women were 70 – 80 years old, although I'm in my late 50's I actually said to myself… That will be me one day, explaining tech to a friend. Really made me laugh ! To those older women who take offense – Advertising uses seniors to make a point, but also because viewer find them funny. As a senior you could just say " laugh now, but with luck you'll live long enough to be that age and the joke will be on you."
Other wonderful senior commercials … Where's the Beef? I've fallen and can't get up!

thanks a lot Peg. I'm an in-home animal caregiver, 79 yrs old, and Ii wonder how funny i was when I was working Hurricane Sandy to get a diabetic cat its shot. i stayed over at the client's home to be sure the cat would get its insulin in the morning and when I awoke a tree branch had fallen on my car and taken out the rear end. hee hee hee. but the cat got its shot. i wonder how funny i was this winter when i worked storm after storm after storm to get to my client's homes and pets. i wonder how funny I am in my gym classes wearing the same size i wore in high school. oh and i also wonder how funny i am when i fall while skating, roll to my knees, push down and get up. i hope i've given you a nice laugh.

I also love to watch us dance to the oldies! We are hilarious! Would like to know more about Beatrice, like we got to know Clara Peller!

I find the commercial insulting – my mother is 86, has wi-fi, a smart phone (which she syncs with her car), blogs and is a published writer. Wonder why using younger people would not work? Elders have the wisdom, sad to see a commercial which sends the message that they are somehow slow and not with it and in someway should be discarded.

The Beatrice Esurance ads use and promote the ageist (and sexist) stereotype that older people, women in particular, can’t master technology. Mathematician Rachel Levy go so tired of hearing people say stuff like “That’s so easy my grandma could get it” that she set up a blog called Grandma Got Stem (STEM = Science Technology Engineering & Math). It’s packed with moving stories of women at work across the 20th century in fields ranging from aeronautics to paleontology. They’re outnumbered by “Beatrices” because this society markets devices designed for nimble fingers and sharp eyes and thinks it’s acceptable to leave older people out of the future. The fact that we find the ad funny shows how deeply we’ve internalized those reprehensible values.

Shame on all connected to this! Be real. You know this is blatant ageism. You could have taken a route that didn't have to offend a whole age group! What about honoring our elders instead of making them look stupid, archaic and useless! It's clearly psychology directed at the 18 to 35 market, capitalising on their conscious and subconscious fear of growing old or anything that is considered old or behind in the times. One day hopefully your kids will show you better, but karma tends to be vengeful, and no one escapes it or the wrath of time!! " Tempus Fugit" for all! and does so equally and absolutely!

I'm sad that people feel the urge to be offended by this ad. I think it's a sweet commercial. To allege ageism is absurd. Worrying constantly about the various "isms" has become a destructive compulsion in our society.
