Are You Prepared for Anything (Even Zombies)?

Whether you live in Seattle or Saratoga, being prepared is always important. Enter the Esurance Zombie Sweepstakes for your chance to win an emergency car kit with all the must-haves.

This week’s sweeps has ended. Comment on the most recent zombie blog post to be entered in the ongoing sweepstakes.

Zombies are coming!

Last week, we launched the Esurance Zombie Sweepstakes.* Tell us what you think should be included in a zombie survival kit and be entered for a chance to win your own emergency car kit, useful in a variety of unexpected situations.

Though we can’t say with any certainty that walkers will one day wreak havoc on the world, we can absolutely guarantee that winter is coming and with it, all kinds of crazy weather. Are you ready?

Why you should be prepared

If you take a look at this map from the New York Times, you can see that Mother Nature poses some kind of threat no matter where you live. From hurricanes on the Eastern Seaboard, tornadoes throughout the Midwest, and earthquakes on the West Coast, anywhere you hang your hat has some potential for crisis. In fact, the U.S. receives more severe weather than any other country in the world.

There have already been 538 confirmed tornados in the U.S. this year. Plus, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is predicting that 2013 will be an “extremely active” hurricane season on the Atlantic. And, according to Farmers’ Almanac, the upcoming winter will be cold, cold, cold.

So whether you’re in Raleigh or Topeka (or even somewhere in the shaky state of California) everyone everywhere should be prepared. It can’t hurt, right?

The Zombie Sweepstakes

We can help you get ready. At Esurance, we always do our best to provide useful info, so this month (National Preparedness Month), we’re giving away 100 emergency car kits to arm you with some of the basics you might need to survive anything from a hurricane to a blizzard to, yes, the undead.

To enter, just comment below telling us what you think is the most important thing to have in case of an emergency (aside from food, water, and some type of weapon … for the zombies).

Each week in September, we’ll give away 25 premium emergency car kits. Comment on the most recent zombie blog post to be entered in that week’s sweepstakes.

Plus, your comment will also automatically enter you for a shot at the grand prize — a trip for 2 to zombie training camp in Portland, Oregon, $2,000 in travel money, and 2 nights in a hotel.

Comment to enter

Comment below to be entered and check out last week’s conversation regarding what’s important and what’s not when it comes to the end of the world. And hey, if you don’t win, come back next week and try again.

Sorry, New Yorkers! You aren’t eligible to win due to regulations in your state. But we encourage you to create your own emergency car kits to be prepared for anything.

Stuff our legal team makes us say

*No purchase necessary to enter or win. A purchase will not increase your chances of winning. The “Sweepstakes Period” begins 9/3/13 at 12:00 p.m. PT and ends 9/30/13 at 12:00 p.m. PT. This Sweepstakes consists of four (4) independent weekly sweepstakes (each a “Weekly Sweepstakes”) beginning 9/3, 9/9, 9/16, and 9/23 and ending at the start of the next Weekly Sweepstakes. Subject to full Official Rules. Open to all of the U.S. (excluding New York) 18+. Limited to one (1) entry per person, per email address per Weekly Sweepstakes. Void where prohibited. Sponsored by Esurance Insurance Services, Inc. 650 Davis Street, San Francisco, CA 94111. Odds of winning depend on number of eligible entries received.

You should definitely have jumper cables in your car. I just used mine last week to jump two separate customer's cars at the gas station at which I work. If cars end up not being useful in a zombie apocalypse (hello?! run them over!), they serve a dual purpose to scale/climb trees (in a pinch).

Be sure to bring a sword or a crossbow. And remember the more distance you put yourself from them the better!

I've been building up our supplies for the last year or so, and making plans for bigger changes on the property. We added oil lamps a few weeks ago, and started planing food in the spring. I still have a lot to do, so any free additions to our small pile would be greatly appreciated.

I always have 3 gallons of water per person for a week on hand. Waterproof bags are always with my important documents. I keep all of the medication in a safe lock box that can be transported easily. There is one suitcase in the house that has 2 changes of clothes for each person and towels and blankets. We have flashlights and windproof lighters available. We should be close to prepared for most things. The most important thing we keep close is our BIBLE.

For my survival pack, I take a page out of the Zombie Survival Guide!

Machete- for chopping heads and chopping underbrush
Multitool- with scissors, knife, and can opener
Medication- aspirin, pepto, antihistamine, and the regular prescriptions I have
Metal water bottle and water purifying straw- refillable!
Emergency blanket- takes up no space and keeps you warm
Rations- a few cans of food and MRE like things
    Flashlight/Lamp- LED with extra batteries
Sketch book, pencils, and playing cards- to keep away boredom!
    Rope- just in case
Garbage bag- to sleep on and keep things dry

I'm also really curious as to what's in the premium emergency car kits as I'm currently putting together a kit for my scooter!

Baseball bat, nail gun or chain saw would work for a zombie survival kit. In a pinch, tire iron…

Perhaps I have some food storage and perhaps some other items that can be of use in an emergency, I just don't like to share my preparations with strangers.
